MCE Ejects Pupils
Teachers, nursery and kindergarten pupils of the Edwinase M/A Primary School in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality of the Ashanti Region, were left stranded last week after they were reportedly locked out of their newly constructed four-unit classroom block by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Akwasi Afrifa Yamoa-Ponko.
The MCE purportedly took the decision because according to him, the building was yet to be inaugurated and officially handed over to the management of the school, even though it has been completed over three months ago while the children have been learning under trees.
Ejisu-Juaben Municipal Engineer, Ismailia, acting on the orders of the MCE, was said to have carried out the action against the school.
Gyamfi Owusu, headmaster of the school, who confirmed their ejection from the classroom by the MCE, said the assembly member, Richmond Frimpong and his Unit Committee members asked them to move into the building, as the children were studying under trees.
He explained that the assembly began the construction of the classroom block for the nursery and the kindergarten pupils in 2011 after it came to its (assembly’s) notice that the old block had become weak and therefore posed danger to the children and their handlers.
Mr. Owusu indicated that initially the assembly decided to renovate the dilapidated block but it collapsed during the renovation process.
He stated that they had been using the new classroom until information got to them last Thursday evening that the MCE wanted the pupils out of the building because ‘it has not been commissioned.’
The headmaster said the affected pupils’ classes had been combined with others as they awaited the outcome of a meeting with the Municipal Director of Education to resolve the issue.
