The President of International Council of Churches, Arch Bishop Dr. Samuel Richard Addae, has charged government, to institute a task force to regularly fumigate the “Odo” and “Subin” rivers in the two major cities Accra and kumasi,

This he said could help protect it from serving as a refuse dump.

Arch Bishop Dr Samuel Richard Addae, also the general overseer of Shiloh United Church Ghana and West Africa said, the move would help protect further loss of lives through floodings in these major cities of Ghana.

Arch Bishop Addae shared this thought, following the tragic flood incidents in Accra-circle, that claimed about 200 lives, which he described as “very disheartening”.

The respected man of God said, is time government in task force to ensure that, refuse disposed in such river bodies by residents will be stop.

According to him, effective implementation of such mechanism will avoid further flood occurrence and to protect future lost of life.

Bishop Dr. Addae shared these in an interview with ModernGhana in Kumasi.

He stated that the government must seek to employ the task force to protect these rivers from filthy materials that find its way into the rivers through the recklessness of residents.

He also advised government to strengthen the policies of institutions mandated to control the construction of buildings in the country.

The man of God decried negligence on the part of some public institutions, which has led to a lot of disasters.

“Those who give permit for construction should not be money conscious but rather think of humans life and do what are expected”, adding, “they should sometimes inspect the land before issuing a permit rather than sitting at their offices to issue order.”

He urged city engineers and town planners to work effectively to reduce horrific man made incidents in our towns and cities.

Bishop Addae also cautioned citizens, to effectively engage in the national sanitation exercise to clean gutters and drains for the waters to flow in times of rain.

”We should avoid dumping refuse anywhere anyhow to save us from all these preventable diseases and flooding in the country”. He stated.
