Google, NFVCB, Homevida holds ‘Safer Internet Day’
Nigeria on Tuesday joined the rest of the world to celebrate the Safer Internet Day (SID) 2017, following the increasing importance of the Internet to everyone especially children and youth, for whom schoolwork, online gaming, and social networking are among the most popular activities.
Since 2004, Safer Internet Day (SID) has been celebrated on the second day of the second week of the second month of the year. SID seeks to promote safer and more responsible use of online technologies, now including mobile Internet.
Safer Internet Day was born in Europe and has grown rapidly, now spreading to over 110 countries worldwide, with thousands of people involved in events to promote safer Internet use. In the past two years, Google Nigeria and local partners have observed SID with the rest of the world, managing to reach out to over 2000 learners, teachers and parents.
With this year’s theme being ‘Be the change: Unite for a better internet’, Google and its partners plan on educating and training over 200 students from various schools across Lagos.
According to Titi Akinsanmi-Bolarinwa, Google’s Policy & Government Relations Manager, the aim of the event is to reach out to young Internet users (target group of 10 to 18 years old) and share information with them on how they can enjoy the multiple benefits offered by the medium of the Internet, while at the same time, staying safe from harm and exposure to age-inappropriate content. The Event featured fun and educative activities like the Balloon Challenge, Quiz, Debates, Dance Drama and lots more.
