The Vitamin That Prevents Cavities

Fluoride is a controversial mineral that is supposed to prevent cavities. But scientists at the University of Washington have discovered a vitamin that stalls tooth decay.

A review study involving about 3,000 children shows that vitamin D helps prevent dental caries or tooth decay.

The research in the review increased kids’ vitamin D with supplemental UV (ultraviolet) radiation or by supplementing diets with cod liver oil or other products containing vitamin D.

According to Dr. Michael Hollick, professor of medicine at the Boston University Medical Center, “the findings from the University of Washington reaffirm the importance of vitamin D for dental health… Children who are vitamin D deficient have poor and delayed teeth eruption and are prone to dental caries.”

While researcher Dr. Philippe Hujoel wants to study the role of vitamin D in tooth health further, he notes: “Vitamin D does lead to teeth and bones that are better mineralized.”
